A Star is Born: Is Moses Itauma the Next Great Heavyweight?

By Reynante Pascual Santiago

The heavyweight division, often described as the “glamour division” of boxing, has just been put on notice. This past Saturday at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester, 21-year-old British phenom Moses Itauma delivered a performance that didn’t just win a fight—it signaled the arrival of a new force in the sport. Facing his toughest test to date in the durable American contender Jermaine Franklin—a man who had previously gone the distance with former world champions like Anthony Joshua—Itauma did something no other fighter has managed: he stopped him.

While many young prospects often fall into the trap of reckless aggression, seeking a quick highlight-reel finish at the expense of technique, Itauma showed maturity well beyond his years. After a blistering start, he methodically broke Franklin down, targeting the body and controlling the pace with a lightning-fast jab. The turning point came in the third round, when a sharp right hand sent Franklin to the canvas for the first time in his career. While Franklin showed immense heart to beat the count and survive until the fifth, he could not withstand the relentless pressure.

With 87 seconds remaining in the fifth round, Itauma uncorked a devastating left uppercut that left Franklin completely incapacitated, forcing the referee to wave off the contest. Before turning professional three years ago, Itauma famously set a goal to break Mike Tyson’s legendary record as the youngest world heavyweight champion in history.

While that specific target—set by Tyson at the tender age of 20 years and 4 months—has passed, the young southpaw’s trajectory remains breathtaking. Itauma now finds himself in a position to cement his name among the absolute legends of the sport. His sights are now set on the record held by Floyd Patterson, who captured the heavyweight crown at 21 years and 10 months. With his undefeated record now standing at 14-0 (12 KOs) and momentum surging, the boxing world is buzzing with the possibility of a world title shot before the end of 2026. If he manages to secure a title in the coming months, he will comfortably etch his name into the history books alongside the icons who paved the way.

The excitement surrounding Itauma’s rise isn’t limited to the UK. Even in the Philippines, fans are closely tracking his progress. Ryan Jove Galicia, a boxing enthusiast from Tiwi, Albay, has been following the young heavyweight’s trajectory and sees something special in the making. “The way Itauma is fighting, the speed he’s showing, and that terrifying power at just 21 is not normal,” Galicia noted during a recent discussion on the fighter’s potential. “I strongly believe that Itauma will soon be a champion and make history. The world is at his feet.”

The boxing landscape is often quick to hype the “next big thing,” but Itauma’s performance against Franklin was different. It wasn’t just power; it was composure, precision, and an exceptional boxing IQ that reminded many of the craft required to rule the division at the highest level.

As we look toward a future where established titans like Usyk and Fury eventually step aside, the division is desperate for a new, transcendent superstar to carry the torch. With a devastating knockout to his name and the history books within reach, one has to ask: Is Moses Itauma simply the next great heavyweight, or is he the start of an entirely new era?
