Boxing Cheated Golovkin

We never saw the greatest wins of the prime Gennady Golovkin because all of his top challengers avoided losing to him.

It was obscenely obvious that Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Canelo Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin all declined to step to challenge Golovkin when they had the chances. All of these establishment assets ducked and dodged and avoided fighting Gennady Golovkin because they KNEW they would all lose.

Never in the history of boxing has a dominant champion so psyched out and intimidated all of his biggest name challengers to turn into ducks and cowards the way Golovkin did. Not even Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns or Roberto Duran scared away their top competition like Golovkin did.

The reason why is simple. The boxing establishment is based in America and Eastern European marquee fighters are a lower priority for the boxing establishment to sell and promote. The boxing establishment prioritizes black and latino fighters like De La Hoya, Mayweather, Cotto, Jones, Holyfield, Tyson, Canelo, etc.

The Klitschko Brothers were also a victim of this underlying bias against Eastern European fighters. Remember, HBO, Showtime and ESPN all elected to not broadcast several Klitschko world heavyweight title fights in America, opting instead to devote budget to far less accomplished North American boxers.

So we never saw Gennady Golovkin at his very best against the very best competition because, I’m totally certain, he would have won decisively and put a lot of American boxing figures out of business or badly damaged their leverage.

Golovkin could only beat the lesser known fighters who stepped up to the plate and he beat them all easily and convincingly, no matter what their style was. Golovkin crushed them all, always in the same brutal, violent, dominant manner.

While Golovkin terrorized the middleweight division, the fake news media ran smear campaigns to discredit Golovkin, saying he wasn’t beating anyone of merit, he was overrated, one dimensional, etc., while ignoring the ugly truth that chicken fighters like Mayweather, Cotto, Martinez, Canelo, Quillin, Jacobs were all running scared away from daring to be great and challenge Golovkin.

Ultimately, Golovkin began to show his age and his performances became less sensational. That’s when Canelo Alvarez finally decided to challenge Golovkin, but all three of their fights looked fake, as if the $400m man (Canelo) had worked out a covert deal to make Golovkin play soft to get the massive paydays only the Canelo franchise could pay him. In the end, Golovkin decided that earning $1m or $2m to beat the Willie Monroes of the world was foolish when he could earn over $25m plus to play soft spar with Canelo.

But the films don’t lie. Golovkin was a grand master scientist of the ring, in a league of his own. In his prime years he was perfect technically, physically and mentally, with speed, power, precision, creativity, accuracy, technical brilliance, granite jaw.

And one of the defining legacies of Golovkin’s boxing career is the fact that he didn’t need one single punch to defeat Mayweather, Cotto, Martinez or Canelo. He beat them all with his rep and image.

One specific example is Mayweather’s cowardice to face Golovkin. Years ago Mayweather boasted that he would beat any man from 154 on down and that Golovkin was overrated and one dimensional. Golovkin read about Mayweather’s words and challenged Mayweather to a fight at 154, vowing to drop the six pounds from 160 to meet the American, who was considered the best fighter in the world. Well, Mayweather never answered the challenge and went into hiding.

That’s what the sport did too. When Golovkin was at his dominant best, the sport ignored him and left him alone.

But I am here to tell you, don’t doubt this for a millisecond, Gennady Golovkin absolutely is one of the all time greatest champions in ring history. That’s why they paid him about $100m to spar soft with Canelo three times.
