Biofile Callum Walsh Interview

By Scoop Malinowski

Status: Super Welterweight boxer. 10-0 with 8 knockouts. Trains with Freddie Roach at Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, CA.

Ht: 6-1   Wt: 154

Age: 22

Birthplace: Cork, Ireland

First Boxing Memory:  Well, I lost my first fight when I was eleven years old. So that’s something I remember losing my first fight ever.

Boxing Inspirations:  I don’t have any really. You know, I’ve always boxed my whole life since I was six. It’s just something I’ve done, it’s all I know what to do. I don’t have anything that inspired me to box. It’s all I did my whole life. I was born to fight. I’ve dedicated my whole life to this sport.

First Famous Boxer You Met Or Encountered:  First one I don’t know.  I know I met a couple when I was really young, Ricky Hatton, people like that. But the first one I can’t remember.

Favorite Movies:  Gladiator, Troy, they’re all kind of the same ones I watch before my fight.

Last Book Read:  Never read a book.

First Job:  Was a waiter [chuckles].

Current Car: Right now, Toyota Tacoma (green).

Greatest Moment Of Career:  It didn’t happen yet. But so far, winning the belt I won two fights ago (June 23, KO 4 Carson Jones). This Thursday night will be better than that I think at Madison Square Garden.

Most Painful Moment:  My professional career… I haven’t had any painful moments. Maybe when I clashed heads with my opponent (vs. Carson Jones) and split my eye. I haven’t really been touched in my professional career.

Favorite Boxers To Watch:  None really. I don’t really like to watch boxing. I prefer to watch UFC a lot more.

Funny Boxing Memory:  There was a lot of funny memories when I was on the national team for Ireland. We used to go away to a lot of different countries, my and my friends, and we’d fight. It was always fun. (Any particular anecdotes stand out?) I don’t think I can say it, no [laughs]. I don’t think I can.

Strangest Fight:  There’s been a couple when I was amateur, a couple of my losses, controversial. That’s probably the weirdest thing about boxing. Fight goes the distance and you never know what’s gonna happen.

Embarrassing Boxing Memory:  A few of ’em. When I was drunk. I don’t know if I could say them either.

Why Do You Love Boxing:  Just moments like this, knowing what I’m doing, fighting at Madison Square Garden, with my friends, family, people that have seen me fight since I’m six years old. They’re all coming to see me fight at Madison Square Garden.

Funniest Boxers Encountered:  Funniest boxers… man… I don’t know any funny boxers, I’d say only myself [smiles].

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor:  I like Irish food, roast dinner, something my mom or grandmother would cook. Also like Italian, pasta, stuff like that.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor:  Chocolate and cookies and cream. One or the other, it’s hard to say.

People Qualities Most Admired:  Just people that are being themselves. Like me right now, I’m not trying to put on an act for an interview. I’m not trying to be anybody I’m not. I’m just being myself. That’s what I like to see people do, just being themselves. Whether people like you or don’t, who cares, as long as you’re being yourself.
